Built-in wardrobes and kitchen cabinets are among the most expensive fixtures in a Singapore home. Replacing them means demolition, disposal, new carpentry and repainting — often weeks of disruption and thousands of dollars. Yet when a door starts sagging or a drawer stops closing, many homeowners assume replacement is the only option.
In most cases it is not. The failure is usually localised: a hinge has pulled out, a runner has worn, or the particle board around a screw has crumbled. These are repairable, often in a single visit. This guide explains what can be fixed, what cannot, and how to decide.
The Most Common Furniture Failures (and Whether They Are Repairable)
Hinges Pulled Out of the Cabinet Carcass
This is the most common wardrobe and cabinet problem we see. The hinge screws strip out of the particle board, and the door droops or falls off. Simply driving a larger screw makes the problem worse — it enlarges the hole and weakens the board further.
Repairable? Almost always. The correct method is to rebuild the fixing point using wooden dowels, inserts or epoxy filler, then re-drill and refit the hinge. The repair holds because the screw now has sound material to bite into.
Drawers That Stick, Jam or Fall Off
Drawer runners wear out, bend or lose their alignment. Sometimes the drawer box itself has separated at the corner joints.
Repairable? Usually yes. Replacing the runner pair is straightforward and inexpensive. Separated drawer boxes can be re-glued and clamped, or reinforced with corner brackets. Only if the drawer base or sides are swollen from water damage does replacement become the sensible option.
Sagging Shelves
Shelves sag under weight, especially in wardrobes and kitchen cabinets where the span is long. The shelf support pins may also have pulled out.
Repairable? Often. Adding a centre support, replacing the shelf pins with stronger supports, or reinforcing the shelf with a metal channel can restore it. A badly bowed shelf may need replacement, which is far cheaper than replacing the whole cabinet.
Wobbly Tables, Chairs and Bed Frames
Loose joints are common in wooden furniture, particularly as glue dries out and seasonal humidity causes movement.
Repairable? Usually yes. Tightening, re-gluing and adding corner blocks or brackets restores rigidity. Metal frames may need bolt replacement or welding, which is a specialist job.
Water-Swollen Cabinet Boards
Particle board and MDF swell permanently when they absorb water. The swollen area crumbles and cannot be compressed back to its original size.
Repairable? Sometimes, by cutting out the damaged section and fitting a new piece. If the swelling is extensive, or affects the structural carcass, replacement may be more sensible. The underlying water source must also be fixed, or the problem will return.
The Economics: Repair vs Replace
A hinge repair or runner replacement typically costs a fraction of replacement carpentry. Even multiple repairs across a wardrobe usually come to far less than removing and rebuilding a fitted unit. Replacement also carries hidden costs: hacking, disposal, patching, repainting and the risk of damaging adjacent finishes.
Repair is usually the better choice when:
- The carcass, shelves and side panels are structurally sound.
- The failure is limited to hardware — hinges, runners, handles, supports.
- The furniture is built-in or fitted, making removal disruptive.
- The item has sentimental or matching-set value.
Replacement may be the better choice when:
- The carcass is extensively swollen, cracked or delaminated.
- Multiple structural joints have failed and the unit is no longer rigid.
- The cost of repair approaches a significant proportion of replacement.
- The layout no longer suits your needs and you are renovating anyway.
What a Professional Furniture Repair Visit Involves
A competent handyman will assess the actual cause before quoting. For a wardrobe door, that means checking the hinge, the carcass material and the other hinges — if one has pulled out, the others may be close behind. For a drawer, it means checking the runner, the drawer box and the cabinet frame alignment.
The repair itself should use appropriate methods: dowels or inserts for stripped holes, matched runner replacements, proper glue and clamping for separated joints. After repair, the item should be tested under real load — doors opened and closed repeatedly, drawers cycled, shelves loaded — before the job is considered complete.
Prevention: Making Furniture Last Longer
- Do not overload shelves beyond their design capacity.
- Keep cabinet areas dry and fix plumbing leaks promptly.
- Tighten loose handles and hinges before they tear out the board.
- Avoid slamming doors and drawers — the impact stress accumulates.
- Use furniture pads under heavy items to distribute load.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a stripped hinge screw hole be repaired permanently?
Yes, if repaired properly. Filling the hole with epoxy or inserting a dowel and re-drilling gives the screw sound material to grip. Simply using a larger screw is a temporary fix that often makes the damage worse.
Is it worth repairing flat-pack furniture?
Sometimes. Cam locks, dowels and connecting bolts can usually be repaired or replaced. Thin particle board has limits, and a repair may not hold under heavy use. An honest assessment before work starts is important.
Do you supply replacement hinges and runners?
Yes, common types are usually available. For unusual sizes or brands, send a photo of the existing part before the visit so a match can be sourced.
Can you repair furniture damaged by water?
Localised swelling can sometimes be cut out and replaced. Extensive swelling or delamination usually means replacement is more economical. The water source must also be fixed to prevent recurrence.
